Scientific name: Myotis mystacinus

Size: Wingspan up to 25cm

Distribution: Found in England and Wales

Months seen: April to October

Food: Moths, flies and midges

Habitat: Frequently roosts in trees and buildings

Echolocation Frequency: 40-50 kHz

Special features: Whiskered Bats are small with shaggy fur which looks as if it has been highlighted.  It also has short stubbly hairs around the eyes and nose which give this bat its name.  The wings are narrow and pointed.

It is similar in appearance to the Brandt's bat, but the tragus of the Whiskered Bat is narrow and straight, whereas the tragus of the Brandt's Bat curves forwards.
