Marble Gall

Marble galls are sometimes called "oak nuts".  They are the product of the gall wasp Andricus kollari.

Originally these wasps were introduced from the Middle East in the 1800's because the galls contain large amounts of tannic acid, which was used for making ink.

The wasp emerges in the autumn by cutting a round hole, about 2mm in diameter, in the side of the gall.
