wren

Scientific name:  Troglodytes troglodytes

Size:  Approximately 10cm

Distribution:  Found throughout the UK

Months seen:  All year round

Food:  Insects

Habitat:  Woods, parks, gardens and hedgerows

Special features:  The Wren is one of the smallest birds found in the UK.  It has brown plumage which is much paler on the breast and underparts.  It has a distinctive upward pointing tail and a cream coloured eye-stripe.

The Latin name 'troglodyte' literally means a cave dweller, and although it's rarely found in caves, the Wren is usually seen flying low and disappearing into holes in dense vegetation.

For such a small bird the Wren has a very loud song which sounds something like "su-su-su-su" or "sssurrrrrrrrrrrr".
