Scientific name: Hypena proboscidalis
Size: Wingspan approximately 35mm
Distribution: Found in most parts of the UK
Months seen: June to October. Larvae found from August to May
Habitat: Gardens, farmland, woodlands, meadows and anywhere nettles can be found.
Food: Caterpillars feed on nettles.
Special features: Snout moths vary in colour from reddish brown to grey-brown. The wings have slightly hooked tips with two narrow, dark brown bands across them. The main distinguishing feature is the "snout" which gives this moth it's name. This is actually the labial palps which are upturned, giving the impression of a long nose.
