There are well over 600 species of moss in the UK. They can vary in size from a few millimetres to 25cm. They don't have roots, and reproduce by releasing spores, and sometimes by means of a modified bud which detaches from the parent and develops into a new individual (known as a gemma). Most mosses can grow from fragments of their stems or leaves.
