Identify It > Bird Section > Mandarin Ducks >
Scientific name: Aix galericulata
Size: Approx 40cm
Distribution: Can be found throughout the UK, but most frequently in England
Months seen: All year round
Habitat: Ponds, lakes and rivers with wooded banks
Food: Mostly vegetation. They are also fond of acorns and chestnuts
Special features: The Mandarin duck is actually a native of eastern Asia, where they have become quite rare. The majority of Mandarin Ducks seen in the UK today are believed to be descendents of birds which escaped from private collections in the 1920's.
Male Mandarin Ducks are unmistakable, with their vertical chestnut coloured wing feathers, head crest, and flamboyant bright orange collar.
Female Mandarin Ducks are less colourful in comparison, with mostly grey and brown plumage. They have distinctive white markings around their eyes which make them appear as though they are wearing spectacles.
