24-Spot Ladybird

Scientific name: Subcoccinella 24-punctata or Subcoccinella vigintiquattuorpunctata

Size: Approximately 3mm long

Distribution: Found in many parts of the U.K. but more frequently in the south

Months seen: May to October

Food: Fungal mould, plants and grasses

Habitat: Fields and meadows

Special features: The 24-spot Ladybird has an orange-brown coloured body and head which is covered in very fine hairs.  The legs are also orange-brown.  There can be between 20 and 24 black spots on the wing casings and some of these may be fused together.  Some specimens are flightless, having no wings beneath their wing casings.

These ladybirds are usually found close to the ground among long grasses, where they enjoy a vegetarian diet.
