Scientific name: Leucopaxillus giganteus
Size: Cap up to 40cm across
Distribution: Found throughout the U.K.
Months seen: July to November
Habitat: Open woodlands, hedgerows, meadows and roadsides
Special features: The giant Funnel Fungi, or Giant Leucopax is not a common fungi, but can grow in large groups, or rings, where it is found. The cap is usually funnel-shaped, but sometimes flattened. It is an off white colour, sometimes marked with beige coloured blotches. The stem is also white, as are the gills, which are forked at the outer edge.
The Giant Funnel Fungi is thought to be edible after boiling, but you should always consult a fungi expert before eating any wild mushrooms that you find.
