Common Blue Damselfly

Scientific name:  Enallagma cyathigerum

Size:  Wingspan approximately 40mm

Distribution:  Found throughout the UK

Months seen:  May to September

Habitat:  Ponds, lakes, rivers and streams

Food:  Small flying insects

Special features:  The male Common Blue damselfly has an all blue abdomen with black markings.  The female can can have a creamy-yellow or greyish blue abdomen with black markings.  Both the male and female have a single stripe on the side of the thorax.
