Scientific name: Eilema lurideola
Size: Wingspan approximately 15 to 17mm
Distribution: Found in most parts of the UK
Months seen: July to August. Larvae found from August to May
Habitat: Gardens, farmland, woodlands and meadows
Food: Caterpillars feed on Algae and lichen growing on trees and shrubs. Sometimes on blackthorn and hawthorn
Special features: Common Footman moth has silky grey coloured wings with a cream coloured stripe along the leading edges which tapers towards the outer tip. The underwings, head and legs are a pale cream colour.
