Candle Snuff Fungi

Scientific name:  Xylaria hypoxylon

Size:  Grows to a height of 30mm

Distribution:  Found throughout the U.K.

Months seen:  All year, but especially in autumn and winter

Habitat:  Grows on dead deciduous wood, especially beech wood

Special features:  Candle Snuff fungi is quite a strong and rubbery fungus and you can actually bend it without breaking it.  It's black at the base, grey in the middle and white at the tips.  Just like a snuffed candle wick - hence the name

Candle Snuff fungi is also sometimes called the 'stags horn fungi'.
