Bracken

Scientific name:  Pteridium aquilinum

Size:  Grows to a height of 1.8m

Distribution:  Found throughout the U.K.

Months seen:  May to November

Habitat:  Grows just about anywhere.

Special features:  Bracken can be distinguished from other ferns by its branched fronds.  The fronds of other ferns rise straight from the ground, usually from a central rosette.

This fern is often quite invasive on farmland and it can be poisonous to livestock.  The spores are released in July and August but these ferns can also spread by underground rhizomes.
