Latin name: Ischnura elegans
Size: Wingspan approximately 40mm
Distribution: Found throughout the UK
Months seen: May to September
Habitat: Ponds, lakes, streams and rivers.
Food: Small flying insects.
Special features: Blue-tailed Damselflies come in several different colour forms, but the majority are black or dark bronze along the top of the abdomen, with the last but one segment of the abdomen (8th segment) being completely blue (hence the name).
This species is fairly common, and can even be found around polluted ponds.
