Bird's-foot Trefoil

Latin name: Lotus corniculatus

Size: Between 10 and 40cm tall

Distribution: Found throughout the UK

Flowering months: May to September

Habitat: Fields, meadows and roadside verges

Special features: Bird's-foot Trefoil is sometimes called "bacon and eggs" because the unopened buds can have pink streaks in them.

Along the stem, the oval leaflets are in pairs, but all the shoots leading out from the main stem have three leaflets on the end - hence the name trefoil.

The bird's foot name is derived from the shape of the seed pods.
